rulings: Tributing 1 monster you control is a cost.
"Substitoad's" effect cannot be activated if you do not have any eligible "Frog" monsters remaining in your Deck.
this card can be searched with one for one, sangan, mother grizly
the ways how to abuse it:
combo1
a well know combo with substitoad in a frog deck is this
1 (or moresubstitoad) on the field and 1 (or more) dupe frog(s)
dupe frog:

since dupe frog is the only target available to your opponent and substitoad will prevent him from being destroyed by battle you will have a atk lock.
note: you will also want to have a flip flop frog on the field to cruch your opponents field control if posible.
combo2
cards needed for this are substitoad, inferno reckless summon, des croaking and a deck with 1 dupe frog and 3 (possible with 2) des frogs
summon substitoad activate its eff and tribute himself to summon dupe frog in DEF than play inferno reckless summon from your hand and since your dupe frog is treaded as des frog you can now summon 3 des frogs from your deck and after that you can use des croaking to clear your opponents field and strike for 5700
combo3
witch doctor of sparta OTK:
needed a field of witch doctor of sparta + substitoad + one more monster
use substitoad to tribute the monster for a frog and than tribute that frog and so on. By doing this you turn every frog in your deck into a 500 points bullet. A deck based on this combo will need cards like POA and exot the ultimate forbidden lord cuz there simply aren’t enough frog to kill him w/o these cards

combo4
needed scapegoat + substitoad
simply use scapegoat to get 4 tokens (at your opponents end phace) and than use substitoad to tribute all of them and get 4 frog on the field and if you have wetlands out this can result in game
a substitoad is also handy for every card that needs cards in the grave (assuming you have 1 more monster on the field except for substitoad)
some exp:
pot of avarice = use substitoad to tribute a monster for a frog and tribute that frog for yet a new frog and so on until you have 5 frogs in the grave and than you can activate POA
chaos necromancer= use substitoads eff to keep tributing your new frogs and so fill your grave. This will easily get your necromancers atk over 4000
blasting the ruins= like with necromancer you can fill your gave with frogs and you will have about half the cards you will need for BTR in your grave
this card is a must for nearly every frog deck but you can also put it in a monarch deck because you can tribute him to get treeborn frog on the field and the Witch doctor of Sparta OTK
