LIGHT AND DARKNESS DRAGON
[You must be registered and logged in to see this image.]
Effect: This card cannot be Special Summoned. While this card is face-up on the field, its Attribute is also treated as DARK. When a Spell or Trap Card is activated, or the effect of an Effect Monster is activated, that activation is negated and this card loses 500 ATK and DEF. When this card is destroyed and sent to the Graveyard, select 1 monster in your Graveyard. Then destroy all cards you control, and Special Summon that monster.

As you can see (if you used the link of the rulings) this card is one of the most controversial cards in the history of yugioh.
This card is also one of those things that you definitely don’t want to have on your opponents side of the field.
It costs your opponent at least 1 or 2 cards to get rid of him (generally).
Easy ways of summoning him:
- Mausoleum of the Emperor: Both players can Normal Summon or Set monsters without Tribute(s) by paying 1000 Life Points x the number of monsters needed to Tribute Summon them.
this is the card most new players use to summon him but it comes with a great cost of 2000 lp
-Star Blast: Pay any number of Life Points in multiples of 500. Reduce the Level of 1 monster you control or that is in your hand by 1 for each 500 Life Points you paid, until the End Phase.
A lesser version of Mausoleum of the Emperor, don’t use this.
Both of these cards come with a 2000 lp cost and give you a -1 so with this your dragon wont give you that much of a Advantech anymore
-totem dragon: This card can be treated as 2 Tributes for the Tribute Summon of a Dragon-Type monster. If this card is in your Graveyard during your Standby Phase and you control no monsters, you can Special Summon this card in Attack Position. You cannot activate this effect if there are any monsters in your Graveyard that are not Dragon-Type. If this card is Special Summoned with this effect, remove it from play when it is removed from the field.
With this card it becomes possible to use light and darkness dragon in a dragon deck.
Totem dragon can be brought into the game easy with cards such as future fusion (FGD), foolish burial, lava dragon.
When you are using Light And Darkness Dragon in a dragon deck you will most likely have a high atk points monster in your graveyard to summon as your Light and Darkness Dragon’s parting gift.
- it may be weird but I find that the easiest way to summon Light and Darkness Dragon is just by tributing 2 monsters.
Meaning that we can use it in any deck that swarms the field and is able to maintain those monsters for 2 turns.
The deck that fits this requirement perfectly is frogs.
With the frog dupe/substi lock having 2 monsters during your turn is no problem + they mostly have a treeborn frog in the graveyard so even more sacrifices
Not only that but if you are able to get the dupe/substi lock out + Light and Darkness Dragon than your opponent can not atk and can not use any effects so this is basically the PERFECT lock. After that you can use unifrog or any other direct atk monster like raging flame spirit to start slowly chipping away at your opponents life points.
Ironically frogs are also Light and Darkness dragon’s biggest weakness or maybe one particular frog is more accurate and I am talking about non other than treeborn frog.
Let me explain what happens if you put our dragon vs this little monster
-standby phase
-activate treeborn frog’s effect
- Light and Darkness Dragon negates
-since it is still the standby phase treeborn frog can activate his effect again
- Light and Darkness dragon negates
-and so on until Light and Darkness Dragon ATK/DEF are drained
-finaly we can summon treeborn frog w/o Light and Darkness Dragon interfearing
-end standby phase
Light and Darkness Dragon also works well in any deck that that uses (abuses) dandylion since those 2 tokens dandy summons can be used to summon Light and Darkness Dragon.
Decks like plants/debris can take use of dandylion’s tokens to summon Light and Darkness Dragon.
Now some players think that if you have Light and Darkness Dragon on your field that this means that you can’t do anything either.
This is NOT true
Basically every card that you can chain to Light and Darkness Dragon’s effect can be used wile he is on the field.
When your opponent activates a card to lower your Light and Darkness Dragon’s atk/def points than you can activate these cards
Threatening Roar: this is a card that can work well in just about any deck and it helps to keep you dragon on the field for one more turn.
Interdimensional Matter transport: for this you can check one of my last articals
Forbidden Chalice: this card is not a card that you want to chain when your opponent activates a effect but reader when you want to do something during your turn since it allows the use of effects/spells/traps during one turn and on top of that at the end of this turn your Light and Darkness Dragon will go back to his full atk/def points
Note: during this turn I advice not to atk and be extra carful since Light and Darkness Dragon will no longer negate cards such as torrential tribute and mirror force.
Other cards that work well with him just because he is a 8 star monster and need tributes.
Trade-in, Herald of creation, brain control, soul exchange.
All in all this card is one of the most feared cards there are in yugioh and especially for decks that rely on combos and “low atk/strong effect monster” also it is devestating vs chain burn
Finally if you want to counter Light and Darkness Dragon that I advise you to put a treeborn frog in your side deck or a honest since it also has a effect that you can keep using over again to lower that monsters atk points.
